Government Spending Bill Restores Student Aid Funding

​A $1.1 trillion government spending bill, which Congress passed and President Obama signed last week, includes increases in federal student aid and college access programs.

The measure contains funding for all federal government agencies for the remainder of the fiscal year, through Sept. 30. Included are the following student aid provisions, which in most cases, restore program funding levels that were subject to automatic across-the-board cuts last year:

The spending bill also provides $75 million for a new “First in the World” grant program. The program aims to encourage colleges and universities to explore innovative strategies for improving educational outcomes and making college more affordable for students and families.
