Effective July 1, 2013, the holders of loans for which the U.S. Department of Education receives total and permanent disability discharge applications, must notify the applicable guarantors.
Loan holders notifying USA Funds® or NELA® of TPD applications under this new regulation should do so beginning July 1 by sending email to TPDNotification@usafunds.org.
Note that this notification process does not replace current requirements and processes for reporting the cancellation of Default Aversion Assistance Requests or for recalling claims for these borrowers.
Contact USA Funds Ask PolicySM by online form with questions about the new federal requirement for reporting total and permanent disability discharge applications — or for answers on any other federal financial aid policy. The National Council of Higher Education Resources offers a Total & Permanent Disability Best Practices document with additional information.
For more information about the process for reporting total and permanent disability discharge applications to USA Funds or NELA, contact Barbara Wilhelm, USA Funds director of claim management, by sending email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling (317) 578-6060.
