Year Up is a national nonprofit organization that enables young adults, ages 18-24, to move from poverty to professional careers in a year. Year Up seeks to close the Opportunity Divide between the 6 million young adults who are disconnected from stable career pathways and the 14 million jobs requiring postsecondary education that are projected to go unfilled during the next decade.
Founded 15 years ago in Boston, Year Up has since served more than 10,500 students.
Year Up partners with community colleges and employers to provide its participants six months of classroom training and a six-month professional track internship with an employer to move participants from poverty to professional careers in a year. Nationwide, 85 percent of Year Up graduates are attending college full-time or employed, with an average annual starting salary of $32,000.
USA Funds® has awarded a $300,000 grant to Year Up to expand its successful Professional Training Corps model to three metropolitan areas – Jacksonville, Fla., Phoenix, and Woodbridge, Va. in the Washington, D.C. area.
USA Funds’ support of Year Up aligns with USA Funds’ metropolitan strategy, to promote Completion With a PurposeSM in major urban areas, and USA Funds’ strategic focus on Key Transitions in Education, to assist students, especially those from disadvantaged households, through important milestones along the path to and through education and into the workforce.
The USA Funds grant is expected to benefit more than 500 students during the next two years.
