National Student Loan Data System

The National Student Loan Database is the U.S. Department of Education’s central database of student aid. By visiting the NSLDS Student Access Web site, you can access information about your federal student loans and Pell Grants.

Setting up an NSLDS account
To access information on NSLDS, you must supply the following information:

  • Your Social Security number.
  • The first two letters of your last name.
  • Your date of birth.
  • Your U.S. Department of Education PIN.

If you don’t yet have a Department of Education PIN, you can establish one by visiting the PIN Web site.

Information housed on NSLDS
NSLDS offers information about the following types of federal education loans (the NSLDS code for each loan type is noted in parentheses):

  • (CL) – FFELP Consolidated.
  • (D1) – Direct Stafford Subsidized.
  • (D2) – Direct Stafford Unsubsidized. 
  • (D3) - Direct PLUS Graduate.
  • (D4) – Direct PLUS.
  • (D5) – Direct Consolidated Unsubsidized.
  • (D6) – Direct Consolidated Subsidized.
  • (D7) – Direct PLUS Consolidated.
  • (D8) - Direct Unsubsidized Loan.
  • (DU) – National Defense Loan.
  • (EU) – Perkins Expanded Lending.
  • (FI) – Federally Insured Student Loan (FISL).
  • (GB) - FFEL PLUS Graduate.
  • (IC) – Income Contingent Loan.
  • (NU) – National Direct Student Loan.
  • (PL) – FFELP PLUS.
  • (PU) – Federal Perkins.
  • (RF) – FFELP Refinanced.
  • (SF) – FFELP Stafford Subsidized.
  • (SL) – Supplemental Loan (SLS).
  • (SU) – FFELP Stafford Unsubsidized.

Using NSLDS information
NSLDS offers detailed information such as:

  • Loan amounts.
  • Name of the loan holder.
  • Loan guarantor.
  • School associated with each loan.
  • Pell-Grant award amounts.
  • Pell-Grant award year.
  • School associated with each Pell Grant.

You can access the information about the status of your federal education loans and grants. If a repayment issue or dispute exists, you can use the NSLDS information to work with you schools or lenders to resolve the issue.

Sample NSLDS loan history data

NSLDS provides the following list of status codes to identify the status of each account.

  • AE - Loan transferred to new holder.
  • AL – Abandoned loan.
  • BC – Bankruptcy claim—discharged. 
  • BK – Bankruptcy claim—active. 
  • CA – Canceled.
  • CS – Closed school discharge. 
  • DA – Deferred. 
  • DB – Defaulted then bankrupt, Chapter 13—active. 
  • DC – Defaulted—compromise. 
  • DD – Defaulted then died. 
  • DE – Death. 
  • DF – Defaulted, unresolved. 
  • DI – Disability. 
  • DK – Defaulted then bankrupt, Chapter 13—discharged.
  • DL – Defaulted—in litigation.
  • DN – Defaulted then paid in full through a consolidated loan.
  • DO – Defaulted then bankrupt—active, other.
  • DP – Defaulted—paid in full.
  • DR – Defaulted loan included in rolled-up loan.
  • DS – Defaulted then disabled.
  • DT – Defaulted—Collection terminated.
  • DU – Defaulted—Unresolved.
  • DW – Defaulted—Write-off.
  • DX – Defaulted—Six consecutive payments.
  • DZ – Defaulted-six consecutive payments, then missed payment(s).
  • FB – Forbearance. 
  • FC – False certification discharge. 
  • FR - Fraud.
  • FX - Fraud satisfied.
  • IA – Loan originated. 
  • ID – In school or grace period. 
  • IG – In grace period. 
  • IM – In military grace. 
  • IP – In post-deferment grace period (Perkins only).
  • IT - Loan transferred by DCS.
  • OD – Defaulted then bankrupt—discharged, other.
  • PC – Paid in full through consolidation loan. 
  • PF – Paid in full. 
  • PM – Presumed paid in full. 
  • PN – Non-defaulted, paid in full through consolidated loan. 
  • PZ - PLUS child death.
  • RF – Refinanced. 
  • RH – Loan transferred by Debt Collection System to Sallie Mae. 
  • RP – In repayment. 
  • TG - Loan transferred by DCS to GA 927.
  • UA – Temporarily uninsured-no default claim requested. 
  • UB – Temporarily uninsured-default claim denied.
  • UC – Permanently uninsured/unreinsured-no default claim requested. 
  • UD – Permanently uninsured/unreinsured-default claim denied. 
  • UI – Unreinsured. 
  • XD – Defaulted, six consecutive payments.

Correcting NSLDS data
If you find information on NSLDS that you believe is incorrect, you may contact the appropriate institution to update your data.

  • Contact your school to correct Pell-Grant and Perkins-Loan information.
  • Contact your loan guarantor to correct any data related to FFELP loans.
  • Contact the direct-loan servicer to request corrections to any Direct loans.

Allow 30 days for NSLDS corrections to post to the system. To determine their most recent loan-balance information, you should contact your loan holders.
