Counseling for Students Who Withdraw From School
- Students who fail to complete their studies have significantly higher
default rates than do students who graduate. Financial-aid staff should place
special emphasis on advising students who withdraw from school about their
rights and responsibilities.
- Make sure you have the correct, permanent address for each borrower and
that the address has been provided to the borrower's lender.
- Attempt to conduct an exit interview with any student
who withdraws. See exit
interview components.
- If a borrower withdraws without notifying the school, the school
should mail exit-interview materials, by certified mail in an envelope stamped
"Address Correction Requested," to the borrower's last known address.
- After registration for the next academic session is complete, identify
borrowers who have not registered. Contact the borrowers, by telephone, mail
or by e-mail, to arrange personal exit interviews before they leave.
- If you are unable to contact a borrower by telephone, e-mail or by mail,
call the borrower's references.
