USA Funds Supports Learning Center That Gives Students a Second Chance

USA Funds® has helped launch the first charter high school in Indianapolis. The school will offer at-risk students and dropouts a second chance to earn high-school diplomas. The Flanner House Higher Learning Center offers students a computer-enhanced curriculum that allows them to complete their high-school studies at their own pace.

The learning center initially will serve 100 students, primarily ages 16 to 21 years.

USA Funds provided a start-up grant of $239,082 to launch the center. USA Funds also has funded a $350,000 endowment from which scholarships will be awarded to students who successfully complete the program and wish to pursue postsecondary education.

Speaking at the opening ceremony for the center, USA Funds President and CEO Carl Dalstrom said, "Our support of Flanner House Higher Learning Center will give students who had difficulty in a traditional school setting a second chance to succeed. Our support is consistent with our vision for USA Funds to be a national leader supporting preparation for, access to and success in education."

The learning center uses a computer-based learning model developed by HUDDLE Learning Inc., of Topeka, Kan. Using computer software, students are assessed, and customized lessons are provided each student based on the assessment results. The model accommodates a diverse, educationally at-risk student population.

Flanner House Higher Learning Center was chartered under the sponsorship of Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson. The center is located on the grounds of a 105-year-old multiservice center on the near-westside of Indianapolis.
