Matrix Outlines Guidance on Total-and-Permanent-Disability Discharges

The U.S. Department of Education recently posted to its Web site a matrix with guidance for handling loan discharges in the case of the total-and-permanent disability of certain borrowers and endorsers. Cases addressed in the Department’s guidance involve the total-and-permanent disability of an individual borrower in a co-made loan or spousal consolidation loan, or the total-and-permanent disability of a PLUS-loan endorser.

Committee members from the National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs, along with representatives of the Department of Education, developed the matrix.

For more information about this guidance on total-and-permanent-disability discharges, contact USA Funds® policy staff.
