Department Extends HEROES Waivers Until 2012

The U.S. Department of Education has extended until Sept. 30, 2012, the waivers under the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act.

In the Federal Register, the Department also noted that the education secretary will review the HEROES provisions to determine whether they require updating in light of recent statutory and regulatory changes. Any necessary updates will be noted in a future Federal Register.

The HEROES Act permits the secretary to excuse military personnel from their federal student loan obligations while they serve on active duty. It also grants the education secretary authority to waive or modify federal student aid requirements to ensure those affected by war, military operations or national emergencies are not disadvantaged regarding their financial aid because of their status. Further information about the waivers is available in Common Manual H.4.B.
