USA Funds-Sponsored Scholarship to Help Student Pursue Nursing Career
An Indiana student plans to put a USA Funds®-sponsored scholarship to use in preparing for a career in nursing.
Chelsea Dock of Goshen will receive a $1,500 scholarship through the magazine Next Indiana: A Guide to Life After High School. USA Funds is funding the scholarship as part of USA Funds' sponsorship of the 2008-2009 edition of Next.
This month she will begin her freshman year at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. There she will pursue a nursing degree with the hopes of one day becoming a registered nurse specializing in neonatal intensive care.
“I’ve always been interested in anatomy and helping others,” says Dock. “What better way to combine those interests than through nursing?”
Dock received a copy of Next in her homeroom class at Northridge High School in Middlebury last fall.
Next is a publication of the Indiana Department of Education, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and IBJ Media Custom Publishing. The magazine provides information about the options available to students after high school and about topics such as handling finances and choosing a career. More than 200,000 juniors and seniors in high schools throughout Indiana received copies of the magazine.
For Dock, Next proved to be particularly helpful as she developed a schedule of steps to take in preparing for college. She also returned a reply card to request additional information about colleges and careers in Indiana; that card entered her in the scholarship drawing.
“The Next scholarship will be incredibly helpful, especially since I’m paying for college on my own,” says Dock. A combination of scholarships, grants and loans will fund her education. The 18-year-old says she also took college-credit courses in high school, and graduated a semester early to begin working to save money for higher education.
USA Funds is Next’s corporate sponsor for the seventh consecutive year. USA Funds also was a key source of information for the magazine’s financial aid and “Money” sections.
Additionally, USA Funds has been corporate sponsor of GRAD magazine for six years. As part of its sponsorship of GRAD, USA Funds is providing an Indiana college student a scholarship toward his graduate school education.
