USA Funds Supports Event That Helps Students Prepare for Postsecondary Education
More than 3,000 students attended the National Association for College Admission Counseling’s Honolulu National College Fair on April 26 at the Hawaii Convention Center. NACAC college fairs allow students to interact with admissions representatives from a wide range of postsecondary institutions to discuss course offerings, admissions and financial-aid requirements, college life in general, and other pertinent information.
USA Funds® supported the Honolulu event, where representatives from approximately 200 nonprofit colleges and universities spoke to potential students about the academic programs that the schools offer. Students also had the opportunity to attend seminars about topics including essay writing and college athletics. After the college fair, students could visit a college campus of their choice. The fair also featured a college-advising center with representatives on hand to talk with students about the college-admission and selection processes, financial aid, majors, scholarships, and the SAT and ACT exam.
Students come from all over the island, and parents and counselors also attend the fair. Due to travel expenses, however, attendance by students from neighboring islands had been limited. For this year’s fair, USA Funds and the HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union contributed nearly $5,000 in financial support to encourage additional participation from the neighboring islands. The support enabled 48 students and nine counselors from the islands of Maui, Kauai, Hawaii, Molokai and Lanai to attend.
“The NACAC college fair is a great opportunity for students to meet with colleges and learn more about the college-admission process,” says Lorraine Teniya, USA Funds customer-relations director. “Thanks to the financial support of USA Funds and the HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union, students from the neighbor islands had the opportunity to share in the experience that their fellow Oahu students enjoyed for many years.”
