USA Funds Employees Help Indianapolis ‘Rebuild Together’
On an early morning on the last Saturday in April, 10 USA Funds® employees and family members made the trek to the southeast side of Indianapolis to make their community a better place. As a part of the 2009 Rebuilding Together Indianapolis event, USA Funds participants joined more than 500 volunteers in Indianapolis to rehabilitate 20 homes on the city’s southeast side.
Rebuilding Together Indianapolis is in its 10th year as an affiliate of Rebuilding Together USA. The nonprofit organization’s mission is to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring that low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and disabled and families with children, may continue to live in warmth, safety and independence.
The USA Funds volunteer team was responsible for one home and spent the day assisting the homeowner with landscaping and exterior painting. Homeowners are there the day of the event and often openly share their appreciation for the volunteers.
USA Funds has been a supporter of Rebuilding Together Indianapolis since the affiliate’s inception. John Morrical, senior auditor at USA Funds, not only spearheads USA Funds’ involvement, but also works throughout the year to recruit and organize the volunteer efforts of those involved with Rebuilding Together Indianapolis’ April event. On the day of that event, he serves as the main contact for all volunteers.
Morrical has volunteered with the organization since 2003 and joined the Rebuilding Together Indianapolis board in 2005.
“As our volunteer chair, John works almost year-round to ensure we have enough volunteers to assist in the rehabilitation of Indianapolis homes the last Saturday of April,” says Michelle Boyd, president of Rebuilding Together Indianapolis. “He is a part of a genuine community effort. Our volunteers are local residents who are committed to giving something back to their community, and he and groups like USA Funds truly make what we do possible.”
“Rebuilding Together Indianapolis has a great mission of helping those who are in need. I enjoy working with the board, and our USA Funds volunteers are great. It’s a great opportunity to give back to the community and make a difference,” says Morrical. “The look on the faces of the homeowners we help is priceless. I think what I get back as a volunteer is actually much more than what we are giving the people we help.”
