USA Funds Publications Help Families Plan, Pay for College

Publications that USA Funds® sponsored in January and February are helping families in eight states navigate the financial-aid process and prepare for higher education. USA Funds supported “USA Funds Countdown to College” publications in Arizona, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Nevada and Wyoming — seven of the states that USA Funds serves as designated guarantor of federal education loans — and in Florida.

“USA Funds Countdown to College” appeared as a supplement to the Jan. 21 edition of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, Honolulu Advertiser, Las Vegas Review-Journal and Reno (Nev.) Gazette-Journal.

The Baltimore Sun included the publication in its Jan. 24 edition. Additionally, 92 Maryland high schools whose guidance counselors requested “USA Funds Countdown to College” received copies of the publication for their seniors.

The supplement appeared in the Feb. 4 edition of the Arizona Daily Star, Arizona Republic, Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune, The Garden Island in Hawaii, Indianapolis Star, Maui (Hawaii) News, Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal, West Hawaii Today, Wichita (Kan.) Eagle and Wyoming Tribune-Eagle.

The Miami Herald distributed the publication Feb. 16-18, while “USA Funds Countdown to College” appeared in the Feb. 18 issue of the Tallahassee Democrat.

Three million copies distributed
Newspaper and direct delivery to high schools resulted in the distribution of nearly 3 million copies of the eight editions of “USA Funds Countdown to College.”
New Futures, a division of Western States Learning Corp., partnered with USA Funds to sponsor the Wyoming edition of the publication.
Each edition of “USA Funds Countdown to College” ran in the week prior to that state’s College Goal Sunday events. Supported by USA Funds, College Goal Sunday helps parents and students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
“USA Funds Countdown to College” also offers information about planning and paying for college, including articles about topics such as completing the FAFSA, the need-analysis and award-packaging process, and federal and state sources of financial aid. Other articles in “USA Funds Countdown to College” focus on saving for higher education, college-planning Web resources, and “financial-aid success stories” from college students and graduates.

“USA Funds is proud to continue its sponsorship of ‘USA Funds Countdown to College,’” says Henry Fernandez, USA Funds executive director of scholarships, outreach and philanthropy. “From College Goal Sunday details, to information about scholarships and grants, the material in the publications helps promote postsecondary-education preparedness, access and success.”
