Reservists Educational Benefits Expanded as Part of Estimated Financial Assistance

Educational institutions must begin including Chapter 1607 reservist benefits as estimated financial assistance for the 2005-2006 award year. Although some reservists may be eligible for retroactive payments for prior award years since 2001, financial-aid administrators should not take into account any retroactive eligibility when determining financial-aid awards for the 2005-2006 academic year.

Chapter 1607 benefits were authorized on Oct. 28, 2004, when the president signed into law the Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005. Chapter 1607 of this law — Reserve Education Assistance Program — provides reservists activated after Sept. 11, 2001, with tuition assistance under the GI Bill or allows for increases to existing education benefits.

If you have additional questions about Chapter 1607, contact USA Funds® policy department.
