College Goal Sunday originated in 1989 as a program of the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association and the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. The program is designed to help families — particularly those with lower incomes and no tradition of college attendance — to surmount the paperwork barriers to receiving financial aid for higher education.
“College Goal Sunday works to help students — particularly first-generation college attendees, low-income families and minorities — complete the financial-aid paperwork that is critical in getting help paying for higher education,” says Henry Fernandez, USA Funds executive director of scholarships, outreach and philanthropy. “USA Funds supports College Goal Sunday as part of USA Funds’ mission to promote higher-education preparedness, access and success for all deserving students.”
