USA Funds Sponsors FAFSA-Filing Assistance in Nine States

College Goal SundayUSA Funds® is providing support to programs in nine states and the District of Columbia to help parents and their college-bound children complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. USA Funds is supplying funding and volunteers to assist College Goal Sunday 2006, which provides families with free expert help in filing for financial aid.

On Jan. 29, Nevada and Hawaii will conduct USA Funds-sponsored College Goal Sunday programs. Volunteers will assist students and parents at 10 sites in Nevada. On Oahu, Hawaii, three sites will offer FAFSA help.

Maryland will offer special College Goal Sunday programs at two sites on Feb. 2 and Feb. 9, in addition to events at 18 sites in Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia on Feb. 12. A second date for College Goal Sunday 2006 in Hawaii will provide FAFSA assistance at two locations on the island of Hawaii.

The following states also will offer USA Funds-supported College Goal Sunday programs on Feb. 12:

Florida will present its first College Goal Sunday at 23 locations on Feb. 19.

College Goal Sunday originated in 1989 as a program of the Indiana Student Financial Aid Association and the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc. The program is designed to help families — particularly those with lower incomes and no tradition of college attendance — to surmount the paperwork barriers to receiving financial aid for higher education.

“College Goal Sunday helps students complete financial-aid paperwork that is critical in getting help paying for postsecondary education,” says Henry Fernandez, USA Funds executive director of scholarships, outreach and philanthropy. “USA Funds supports College Goal Sunday as part of its mission to promote higher-education preparedness, access and success for all deserving students.”
