House Approves 2008 Student-Aid Appropriations

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a fiscal-2008 spending measure, which provides $3.3 billion in student financial-aid programs. The measure would increase the maximum Pell Grant to $4,700 and preserve funding for several other federal student-aid programs that the Bush administration had proposed to eliminate.

The administration has threatened a veto of the measure because it contains “an irresponsible and excessive level of spending.”
