President Bush Signs Bankruptcy-Reform Bill

President Bush has signed legislation that reforms the nation's bankruptcy law. Included in the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 is a provision that extends to private education loans the same bankruptcy-discharge requirements that now apply to federal education loans. The new law requires that borrowers prove that repayment of the education debt would impose an undue hardship. Read the president's statement about the new law.
